Kafka's Nightmare Becomes an Opera: The Metamorphosis at martini-Park
Gregor Samsa awakens as a beetle – and suddenly, the order of an entire family falls apart. In the opera The Metamorphosis, Gordon Kampe and Philipp Löhle transform Franz Kafka's famous tale into a contemporary music theater about alienation, isolation, and the fragility of family relationships. On December 4, 2026, the Augsburg audience at martini-Park will experience a production that combines grotesque comedy with melancholic sound colors.
A Stranger in One's Own Home
The dramaturgy focuses not only on Gregor but also on those who have to live with his transformation. Father, mother, sister, and maid face an alien cohabitant – and slowly lose touch with the human being they were once financially dependent on. The familiar apartment turns into a non-place, proximity becomes an oppressive distance.
Between Grotesque and Melancholic Sound
Composer Gordon Kampe develops a fast-paced, catchy musical language that playfully switches between genres and styles. A bizarre sounding beetle quartet forms the musical highlight and gives the stage event a peculiar, almost surreal attraction. The acoustics of the Augsburg Philharmonic, the precise musical direction, and the German language with German surtitles condense Kafka's material into an immediate operatic experience.
A Production with Strong Theatrical Images
Director André Bücker leads the characters through a world where family routines increasingly tilt. The stage design by Felix Weinold, costumes by Aleksandra Kica, choreographic elements by Helena Sturm, and video and light design create a theatrical atmosphere between everyday life and nightmare. The lighting mood accompanies the social decay of the family, while the acting and singing sharpen the question of when a person becomes a non-person in the eyes of their surroundings.
An Evening About Alienation and Belonging
Kafka's tale also strikes a chord in this operatic version. The production questions the value of a person beyond their function, family responsibility, and the moment when solidarity turns into defense. The musical direction is led by Ivan Demidov, and the dramaturgy is by Sophie Walz.
The performance lasts about two hours and takes place without an intermission. An introduction begins 30 minutes before the performance starts. During the overture and in the interlude to the third part, stroboscopic light effects are used.
Conclusion: An Operatic Evening with Resonance
The Metamorphosis promises an intense stage experience between Kafka adaptation, contemporary opera, and grotesque family story. Those who want to experience music theater with sharp dramaturgy, haunting lighting mood, and unusual sound images will find an evening at martini-Park that resonates long after the final chord.
