With Major Tom under the star dome into the unknown

On Sunday, November 1, 2026, a gate to the stars will open at the Planetarium Augsburg: Little Major Tom – Departure into the Unknown combines an exciting space adventure with fascinating insights into the future of space travel. The performance begins at 3:00 PM and is aimed at families with children aged seven and up.

A mission between courage and responsibility

In 2053, Tom and his friend Stella live on the Space Camp 1 space station. While Stella faces every challenge with determination, Tom's fear of his first spacewalk grows. Then a weather satellite goes out of service as a dangerous hurricane brews on Earth. Only Tom and Stella can take on the crucial mission – and they have 48 hours.

Fulldome images and cosmic atmosphere

Under the planetarium dome, the production unfolds an impressive connection of storytelling, animation, and astronomical knowledge. The dark theater atmosphere, glowing star fields, and spatial acoustics allow the audience to dive directly into the action. The stage design encompasses the entire dome space: the sky becomes the playing area, with the audience sitting right in the middle of the cosmic event.

Drama for the whole family

The production combines adventure, acting, and knowledge transfer. At its heart is Tom's inner development: out of uncertainty arises responsibility, out of fear grows courage. At the same time, the story focuses on Earth and the possible consequences of climate change. This gives the stage experience not only its fantastic dimension but also an objective and social level.

From the children's book series to the planetarium

The popular book series has been published by Tessloff Verlag since 2018. The planetarium production was realized by Softmachine in 2023. Dr. Peter Popp from Reef Distribution developed the story in collaboration with musician Peter Schilling, whose internationally renowned song Major Tom musically accompanies the space atmosphere.

A knowledge adventure with a live component

Public performances at the planetarium usually last between 60 and 70 minutes. The planetarium film will be combined with a live-moderated section about the current starry sky. Depending on the length of the film, the moderation will adapt the flow, creating a varied stage experience for children and adults.

Conclusion: Taking off together

Little Major Tom – Departure into the Unknown promises a glowing family experience between space travel, friendship, and climate awareness. Those who want to feel the theater atmosphere under the dome, experience spectacular star formations, and embark on a risky mission with Tom and Stella will experience Augsburg's planetarium as a stage of the universe.
