lab.30 2026: Media art as a walkable future laboratory in Augsburg
From October 29 to November 1, 2026, the media art festival lab.30 transforms the kulturaus abraxas in Augsburg into a walkable laboratory for contemporary media art under the motto Becoming. International artists combine interactive installations, audiovisual works, and participatory formats into a four-day multi-day experience between exhibition, concert, performance, and workshop.
When humans and machines meet anew
Central to the exhibition are questions that lead straight into the present: How does artificial intelligence change our perception of humanity? What happens when machines learn, react, and seemingly develop their own personalities? From AI clones to interactive robotic guinea pigs, lab.30 opens up unusual perspectives on robotics, machine learning, and the boundaries between humans and technology.
The festival atmosphere is created not only by viewing the works. Many installations invite experimentation, observation, and co-creation. The audience transitions from passive guests to part of the artistic process and experiences media art immediately with multiple senses.
Exhibition, concerts, and performances over four days
The festival line-up combines international media art with experimental concerts, performances, guided tours, and workshops. Open-air accents on the green space behind the kulturaus complement the interior spaces of the abraxas and expand the festival area into new experiential spaces.
Special program points include audiovisual works, electronic soundscapes, and performances where live music, multi-channel electronics, and artificial intelligence engage in dialogue. The exhibition remains the common thread of the festival: each station broadens the view of digital culture and the future of coexistence.
The meadow of media art brings families to the festival
For the first time, the green space behind the kulturaus will be used as the meadow of media art. In two greenhouses and garden houses, an interactive area for children, youth, and families is created in cooperation with kidsLab Augsburg and Habitat e.V.
Workshops and experiments of the Augsburg Games Award turn young visitors into creators themselves. Developed computer games, glowing objects, junk robots, electronics, sound, and a speaking flower pot demonstrate how playfully festival organization, media education, and artistic research come together.
Festival knowledge compact: Tickets and visit
The evening ticket for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday costs regularly 14 euros. A 2-day ticket is available for 22 euros, and the 4-day ticket costs 32 euros. For the afternoons on Saturday and Sunday, tickets are available from 9 euros; workshops cost 10 euros including admission to the exhibition that afternoon.
Discounts apply, among others, to students, trainees, university students, federal volunteers, unemployed individuals, and people with severe disabilities. Children up to and including five years have free admission. With the cultural social ticket, a ticket can be purchased for 1 euro at the festival box office. The respective day or evening ticket includes access to the exhibition as well as the concerts and performances of the day.
Conclusion: A festival for curious eyes and open ears
lab.30 2026 brings media art out of the white cube and makes it an experiential shared experience. Between interactive installations, electronic sounds, questions of the future, and family participation formats, a festival emerges that does not showcase technology as an end in itself, but as material for new stories. Anyone wanting to experience Augsburg's media art scene, experimental stage formats, and the community spirit of a special cultural weekend should discover lab.30 live at the kulturaus abraxas.
