Christmas turns into stage chaos: The Messiah at Sensemble Theater Augsburg

On December 4, 2026, the Sensemble Theater in Augsburg will transform into a turbulent Christmas stage. Patrick Barlow's comedy The Messiah tells the Christmas legend with rapid role changes, pointed slapstick, and plenty of unexpected mishaps.

A Christmas story, a hundred roles, and two actors

Theo and Bernhard take on all the characters of the evening with great enthusiasm: from the Archangel Gabriel to Joseph and Mary to Roman tribunes and dull shepherds. The reduced cast serves as the motor for this stage performance. Each appearance demands precise timing, quick synchronization, and a keen sense of comedic rhythm.

Buffoonery with perfect timing

In this Christmas comedy, the holy story gets completely out of step. Mishaps force the actors to improvise, while small misfortunes turn into large stage scenes. Sometimes angels sail through the room, and sometimes a heavily armed Roman army marches through the desert of Galilee. The result: lively theater, surprising twists, and an audience atmosphere that swings between astonishment and roaring laughter.

A Christmas classic of Sensemble Theater

The Messiah has been on the program of Sensemble Theater every Christmas since 2002. The production combines classic Christmas motifs with British-inspired farce, physical comedy, and a pace that fills the theater's acoustics to the last row. Author Patrick Barlow is known as a writer, actor, and director in radio, film, television, and theater. His works include the screenplays for Revolution!!, Van Gogh, and The True Adventures of Christopher Columbus.
