Between Dream and Power: Calderón's Great Stage Classic in Augsburg

On November 7, 2026, a baroque world theater of unbroken relevance will open in the martini-Park of the Augsburg State Theater. Life is a Dream by Pedro Calderón de la Barca combines poetic language, tragic depth, and comic breaks into an intense theatrical experience about freedom, fate, and just rule.

A Prince Between Prophecy and Self-Determination

The center of the plot is Sigismund, the son of King Basilio. A dark prophecy announces him as a future tyrant. Fearing this future, the king has his son locked away in a remote tower as a child. Years later, Basilio dares a fateful experiment: Sigismund is brought to the court, informed of his origins, and made king for a day.

What follows transforms the courtly space into a laboratory of power. Between dream and reality, obedience and rebellion, the dramaturgy asks whether a person can escape their predetermined character. At the same time, Rosaura crosses the prince's path. She arrives at the royal court to restore her injured honor and brings a second perspective on rule, identity, and self-empowerment into the narrative.

Fanny Brunner's Modern Production

The Austrian director Fanny Brunner brings Calderón's 1636 premiered drama into the present without sacrificing its baroque poetry. Her production focuses on power and oppression, the conditions of free choices, and the question of who is truly allowed to shape a stage space.

The direction connects the classical plot with an additional narrative layer through video technology. This gives weight to marginalized characters and minor plots as well. The theatrical imagery does not remain at a historical reconstruction but makes the conflict between personal freedom and political order immediately tangible.

Reduced Stage Design, Strong Atmosphere

Daniel Angermayr's stage design reveals the theater technology and works with individual large props. Historical forms meet modern materials in the costumes. This creates a visual tension space where past and present intertwine.

Atmospheric, sometimes dark sounds from Alex Konrad intensify the theatrical atmosphere. Light, acoustics, and video images turn the martini-Park into a resonating body for Sigismund's inner unrest. The acting talent of the ensemble carries the shift between courtly order, psychological threat, and grotesque comedy.

A Classic of European Theater

Calderón's work is among the significant dramas of the Spanish Siglo de Oro, the Golden Age of Spain. In lyrical language, the play addresses questions that extend far beyond its time of origin: How does responsibility arise? What makes a just ruler? And how can one act rightly when reality itself appears uncertain?

The translation by Georg Holzer preserves the poetic character of the original while also opening it up for today's audience. The casting of Julius Kuhn as Sigismund, Katja Sieder as Rosaura, and Michael Schrodt as Basilio gives the power struggle a personal, physical tension. The ensemble is complemented by Sebastian Müller-Stahl, Jenny Langner, Kai Windhövel, and Patrick Rupar.

Conclusion: A Theater Evening Between Poetry and Political Present

The audience can expect a multi-layered production with compelling stage design, precise direction, dark music, and a plot that continuously shifts between dream and reality. Life is a Dream invites reflection on freedom, power, and the possibility of moral change. Those who wish to experience great acting and visually striking contemporary theater will find an evening full of tension and resonance in the martini-Park.
