Ingeborg Bachmann's Restless Language World in Augsburg
On December 10, 2026, the Augsburg City Library will dedicate an evening to the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann. The evening combines the presentation of a new Bachmann biography with a staged reading of correspondence and opens an intense access to the life, work, and literary thinking of one of the most significant authors of post-war German literature.
A New Portrait of the Poet
The Leipzig literary scholar Dieter Burdorf presents his biography published in the Bachmann anniversary year 2026. The focus is on Bachmann as a restless self, where biographical experience and literary work are closely intertwined. The presentation is also based on correspondence that has only been published in recent years, thus expanding the view of the author of The Timed Time, The Thirtieth Year, and Malina.
Literary Studies Meets Stage Art
In conversation with Dieter Burdorf, the Augsburg literary scholars Bettina Bannasch and Matthias Löwe place Bachmann's work in the cultural discourse of her time. In doing so, literary expertise, biographical research, and the question of how an author uses language as an instrument of knowledge and social critique intersect.
Correspondence as a Lively Reading
The actresses and actors Elif Esmen and Kai Windhövel from the Augsburg State Theatre read from Bachmann's correspondence with authors such as Hans Magnus Enzensberger. The voices of the performers lend an immediate reading atmosphere to the texts: personal closeness, intellectual tension, and Bachmann's linguistic artistry become perceptible as a literary experience.
A Central Voice of German Literature
Ingeborg Bachmann shaped German literature after 1945 with poetry, prose, radio plays, essays, and librettos. For The Timed Time, she received the Group 47 prize in 1953, and in 1964 she was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize. Her texts connect poetic condensation with sharp social criticism and raise questions about war, gender relations, memory, and individual freedom.
Cooperation of Three Augsburg Cultural Institutions
The event is created in cooperation between the University of Augsburg, the Augsburg State Theatre, and the Augsburg City Library. Thus, the evening connects research, acting, and public literary communication in a place that allows for direct interaction with the audience.
Entry is free. Visitors can expect a profound author encounter with biographical insights, literary classification, and compelling stage reading. Those who wish to rediscover Bachmann's linguistic art or experience her works from an expanded perspective will find a concentrated access to her restless, still impactful literary self this evening.
