Two voices of contemporary literature in conversation about love and belonging
On Tuesday, November 24, 2026, Ruth-Maria Thomas and Dana Vowinckel will meet at the Kresslesmühle Augsburg for a literary evening about love, origin, class, and societal divides. Under the title sunsets & books, the authors will discuss their new novels and the demanding art of writing a second novel.
Literary encounter with two defining voices
Ruth-Maria Thomas will read from her novel The Second Greatest Love. Born in 1993 in Cottbus, the author studied at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig and was nominated for her debut The Most Beautiful Version for the German Book Prize, among others. She received a significant award for her literary work with the Ulla Hahn Literature Prize.
Dana Vowinckel will bring her novel Anton and Alma to the evening. Born in 1996 in Berlin, the writer studied linguistics and literary studies in Berlin, Toulouse, and Cambridge. Her debut Waters in Ziplock was awarded the Mara Cassens Prize, the Family Novel Book Prize, and the Text & Language Literature Prize.
Love, origin, and the gray areas of life
At the center of the conversation are two love stories and a present in which personal relationships are interwoven with social differences, family influences, and questions of belonging. The event looks at the gray areas of life and love: misunderstandings, closeness, distance, and the struggle for mutual understanding.
The literary quality of the evening arises from the interplay of two narrative attitudes. Thomas combines precise observation with an immediately effective language, while Vowinckel unfolds different perspectives and complex familial as well as societal contexts. This creates a conversation about narratives, character drawing, and the artistry of contemporary novels.
Reading atmosphere in the Kresslesmühle
The Kresslesmühle is one of the traditional sociocultural centers of Augsburg and provides the fitting setting for an intimate meeting of authors. The evening will be moderated by Tina Lurz. A book table from Schlosser's bookstore invites attendees to discover the presented novels on site. Drinks are available at Café Dreizehn.
An evening for literature lovers
Visitors can expect a concentrated reading followed by a discussion about new literature, social reality, and the forms of modern love stories. Those who wish to not only read contemporary literature but also directly experience the authors and their thoughts will find an inspiring literary experience at sunsets & books.
