Respect! Living Library: Experience diversity in direct conversation

On Thursday, November 19, 2026, the Augsburg City Library will transform into a special place for listening, asking questions, and personal exchange. The interactive format Living Library – Telling Diversity places individuals with different biographies and special life situations at the center.

Living stories instead of printed pages

In this extraordinary reading event, there are no books on the shelf, but people with their experiences. The so-called living books share stories from their lives and provide insights into perspectives that often remain hidden in everyday life. This creates a unique literary experience: immediate, dialogical, and characterized by linguistic authenticity.

20 minutes for a new perspective

After the welcome and introduction of the living books, guests choose three conversation partners. In each 20-minute storytelling and question sessions, there is space for focused listening, respectful curiosity, and personal encounters. The format combines narrative experience, social discourse, and cultural educational work.

An atmosphere of listening

The conversations take place in small groups at various locations within the City Library. This intimate reading atmosphere creates closeness: voices become narratives, biographies open chapters, and encounters become an invitation to reconsider familiar viewpoints.

Shared exchange to conclude

After the discussion rounds, all attendees come together in the foyer for an open exchange. The event thus symbolizes a commitment to diversity, respect, and mutual understanding. The evening is organized by the Augsburg City Library in cooperation with the District Youth Council Swabia, the Maria Theresia Gymnasium Augsburg, the Augsburg Adult Education Center, and the Office for Social Integration.

In conclusion: Literature as Encounter

The Living Library shows that storytelling extends far beyond the classical concept of literature. Visitors can expect an inspiring evening full of personal stories, surprising insights, and immediate author encounters with people from the local community. Admission is free; no registration is required.
