A door, many possibilities: Nad Otterbach's picture book comes to life

What lies behind a closed door? Something beautiful, funny, or mysterious – perhaps also something that initially requires courage. In the reading with Kamishibai at the Young Theater Augsburg, Nad Otterbach invites children from six years old to explore these questions through language, images, and imagination.

Literature, illustration, and curious questioning

The focus is on the picture book Doors and where they (might) lead, which works with few words and detailed, humorous illustrations. The author and illustrator Nad Otterbach opens a poetic space for thought: A door marks not only a boundary but also the possible beginning of discovery, change, and meeting.

The reading combines literary quality with visual storytelling. The Kamishibai format creates a concentrated reading atmosphere where voice, image, and shared viewing intertwine. For young visitors, a sensory literary experience emerges that encourages questioning, wonder, and further thinking.

Author Nad Otterbach: Drawing as a language of its own

Nad Otterbach lives in Augsburg and works as an illustrator and author. After studying communication design at the University of Augsburg and a master's in illustration at Falmouth University, she developed an independent visual language combining observation, humor, and narrative precision. Her children's book is set to be published in 2024; previously, she published, among others, the graphic novel Surf – Diary of a non-surfer.

For her artistic work, Otterbach has received several awards, including a Silver Nail at the ADC Talent Award. She was also honored with a residency scholarship from the Weitendorf Foundation for the Promotion of Children's Literature. Her illustrations combine technical precision with an open, child-friendly narrative and show how much storytelling lies in lines, spaces, and small details.

Reading, conversation, and playful theater education

Nad Otterbach will read together with director Susanne Reng and Polina Khodos from the JTA play club U17. Afterwards, they will discuss the book and the development of a multilingual theater piece that the Young Theater Augsburg is developing together with the Homemade Dance Theater from Tel Aviv.

Harald Volker Sommer will subsequently expand the author encounter with theater-educational games. Children and curious adults will have the opportunity to try something new. The event connects literary mediation, interdisciplinary theater, and cultural exchange as part of the Jewish Culture Week Augsburg Schwaben 2026.

A literary afternoon for the whole family

The event is aimed at everyone from six years old and takes place in the foyer of the Young Theater Augsburg. Admission is free, and no registration is required. This open format makes the reading an accessible entry point to children's literature, illustration art, and shared play.

Those who experience how a picture book turns into a conversation, a stage project, and their own movement idea discover literature as a vibrant art form. Visitors can expect an inspiring author encounter with images, language, questions, and play – an afternoon that encourages not to keep unknown doors closed too soon.
