A Fairytale Advent Afternoon with Hansel and Gretel

On Tuesday, December 15, 2026, the martini-Park in Augsburg will transform into a colorful fairytale world: The Christmas concert for seniors brings Engelbert Humperdinck's beloved opera Hansel and Gretel to the stage. The performance starts at 3 PM.

Romantic Opera with Pre-Christmas Atmosphere

Humperdinck's music combines catchy folk melodies, romantic orchestration, and grand operatic effect. The story of two siblings navigating a challenging world and encountering mysterious dangers in the forest unfolds a special emotional warmth during Advent.

The Orchestra Becomes Part of the Stage World

In the new production by the Augsburg State Theater, the orchestra is visibly seated on stage. This allows the guests to experience conducting, sound, and stage performance in a particularly immediate way. The musical direction is taken by Sebastiaan van Yperen. Aldona Farrugia locates the story within Augsburg's history as a city of the textile industry, blending the historical working world with fairytale fantasy.

Music Theater for Young and Old

The shortened version lasts about 80 minutes and will be performed without an intermission. On stage are members of the opera ensemble, including Natalya Boeva as Hansel, Jihyun Cecilia Lee as Gretel, and Sally du Randt as the Witch. Imaginative costumes, lighting, and a visible orchestra create an atmospheric concert experience with familiar melodies and strong imagery.

A Festive Afternoon at the martini-Park

The audience's mood meets the special live atmosphere of the theater: familiar fairy tale motifs, warm orchestral colors, and the tension between forest adventure and redemption make this event a fitting Christmas concert for seniors.

Conclusion: Visitors can expect an accessible, musically rich, and atmospheric music theater experience. Those who wish to experience Humperdinck's fairy tale opera live during Advent should secure their tickets in good time.
