Guiding Sound Colors: Tianwa Yang and Nicholas Rimmer in Augsburg
In the second Artist-in-Residence concert of the 2026/27 season, three highly distinct sound worlds meet on February 5, 2027. Violinist Tianwa Yang and pianist Nicholas Rimmer present sonatas by Johannes Brahms, George Antheil, and Richard Strauss – an evening concert between romantic intimacy, rhythmic experimentalism, and orchestral sound fantasy.
Between Late Romanticism and Musical Modernity
Johannes Brahms opens the program with his Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major op. 100. The work combines chamber musical intimacy with sweeping melodies and draws from the song art of the composer. In the focused examination of the work, it becomes audible how closely the violin and piano communicate: once in finely tuned dialogue, then again in powerful density.
George Antheil Breaks the Genre
Contrastingly, George Antheil's Violin Sonata No. 2 stands in between. Its musical language combines recognizable melodic fragments with stomping rhythms, dance-like energy, and a consciously provocative sound aesthetic. The piece feels both swinging and experimental at the same time. A drum at the end expands the chamber music framework and gives the work a surprising, almost dramatic punchline.
Richard Strauss and the Uproar of Musical Color
Richard Strauss concludes the evening with his Violin Sonata in E-flat Major op. 18. The young composer developed a colorful, expressive tonal language in it, which already points to the sonic opulence of his later works. The sonata connects lyrical lines with virtuosic brilliance and sets the two instruments in a tension-filled interplay of warmth, movement, and dramatic gesture.
Tianwa Yang as Artist in Residence
Tianwa Yang shapes the 2026/27 season as Artist in Residence at the Augsburg State Theatre. The multiple award-winning violinist has received, among others, the Opus Klassik as Instrumentalist of the Year 2022. Her interpretation combines technical sovereignty with uncompromising musical understanding and a pronounced sensitivity to stylistic transitions. At the piano, she is accompanied by Nicholas Rimmer.
An Artistic Experience for the Ears
The exhibition atmosphere of a gallery gives way to the concentrated atmosphere of the concert hall this evening: light, space, and sound shape an aesthetic experience in which every musical gesture gains meaning. The examination of the works leads from Brahms's romantic sound speech through Antheil’s rhythmic friction to Strauss's color-intensive sound architecture. Cultural education occurs here directly through listening experiences and the comparison of different epochs and art forms.
The audience can expect a multifaceted chamber concert with two outstanding interpreters, three stylistically independent violin sonatas, and a program that understands musical tradition as a starting point for new perspectives. Those who want to experience Brahms, Antheil, and Strauss up close should not miss this special artistic experience in Augsburg.
